About M³
M³ was formed in 2006 by KG Charles-Harris to address the startling statistics of more than 1/3 of all black men in the US being part of the penal system. Correlating this with the significant high-school drop-out rate of more than 50% nationally and 73% in Oakland, Richmond and Berkeley, and the fact that 60% of black men who had dropped out of school had spent time in prison.
He thought it obvious that with such a high correlation between prison and school dropout rates for black males, improving educational success would be a primary factor in changing the dynamic.
In order to appeal to both young black youth and their parents, he devised a program where a heavy academic program with a strong mathematics focus was promoted as a “Sports & Entertainment” fast track. The sports and entertainment portions of the program are just as real as the academic focus and a useful instrument in appealing to both children and parents who have been inculcated with sports and entertainment being the best pathway to major success for blacks.
The program has met with strong initial success with its innovative approach and multitalented team and will be rolling out to more schools and school districts as funding and management allows. In addition, a number of volunteers and supporters have ensured that the program is, and continues to be successful. In speaking about M³, we speak about the community at large that’s effecting change and our volunteers and supporters are at the forefront of this community. |
