WHAT WE DO
M³ works with black boys, often from low and middle-income families, to produce tomorrow's leaders. We recognize that it's difficult for black boys to motivate themselves for excellence in education when there are few role models in their communities who have seen tangible benefits (nice cars, houses etc.) from the educational path.
At M³ our focus is to create habits of success. We therefore combine strenuous physical exercise in sports practice with rigorous academics (with a focus on mathematics) and ensure that prominent black men from the community interact with the boys on a regular basis. In addition, we incorporate entertainment arts and analysis of contemporary music and films to create an environment of social awareness and critique.
Discipline is the first stage of creating a habit of success - once a habit is formed, discipline becomes superfluous. Once a habit is formed, will and self-control are no longer necessary to produce the desired behavior. What we do is just a habit.
Success is a habit. There are all kinds of little things that produce success - time management and preparation being foremost among these. This is what we do at M³ - lay the foundation for a successful lifestyle at school and at work.
Language is central to the human experience and influence. We consider mathematics a conceptual language, and since mathematics is the foremost reason persons drop out of high school, regardless of ethnicity or gender, M³ has a strong focus on math as an enabling skill. Once mastered, mathematics enables the student to master some of the more difficult academic topics in secondary or tertiary education.
A happy and successful life is made much easier when healthy - we teach boys to be physically fit, ingest a good diet and have a positive mental attitude.
M³ helps boys attain new skills and have implemented a new pilot program at Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley, California. Participate in what we do - be a force for change in the community.
